Latent construct
A latent construct is a theoretical, unobservable variable that cannot be directly measured or observed. Instead, it is inferred from a set of observable behaviors or responses. These constructs serve as foundational elements in psychometric theory, representing psychological traits such as intelligence, personality, or prejudice that are not directly accessible through direct measurement. For example, prejudice is a latent construct because it cannot be directly seen or measured; rather, it is inferred through responses or behaviors that suggest its presence.
1. How can a psychologist most effectively infer the presence of an unobservable trait in a client during assessment?
2. Which role in psychometric testing primarily focuses on evaluating the quality and appropriateness of a psychological test before it is widely used?
3. How do psychological assessment and testing differ or are similar?
Latent construct — definition?
Unobservable psychological variable inferred from responses.
Observable behavior — role?
Provides data to infer latent constructs.
Implicit Association Test — purpose?
Measures latent biases via response speed and accuracy.
Psychological trait — example?
Intelligence, personality, prejudice.
Operational definition — function?
Links latent traits to measurable responses.
Reliability — what?
Consistency of test scores over time or forms.
