Key Concepts & Definitions

  • Membranous glomerulonephritis (characterized by electron-dense thickening of the glomerular basement membrane due to complement deposition). This thickening results from immune complex deposits on the subepithelial side of the basement membrane, leading to a "spike and dome" appearance (formation of basement membrane spikes in membranous glomerulonephritis).
  • Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) Types I and II: Distinct forms of immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. Type I involves subendothelial immune deposits, while Type II (also called dense deposit disease) features intramembranous dense deposits within the basement membrane, often associated with complement activation (see authors for detailed classification).
  • IgA nephropathy (also known as Berger's disease): Features mesangial IgA deposits seen on immunofluorescence, with complement activation playing a role. It is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis worldwide and involves immune complex deposition predominantly in the mesangium, leading to mesangial proliferation.
  • Primary vs secondary glomerulopathies: Primary…
