1. Desert Relief and Livelihoods

Key Concepts & Definitions

  • Oasis: A fertile area in an arid desert where underground water reaches the surface naturally or is extracted through wells.

★ Must-know

  • Pakistan's desert regions include the Thal Desert in Sindh Sagar Doab, the southeastern Thar Desert (including Nara, Cholistan and Tharparkar), and the Kharan Desert.

  • Desert relief consists of sandy plains or undulating sandy areas, bare and weathered rocks, and mainly north–south longitudinal rolling sand dunes, with winds continually changing the landscape.

📌 Agriculture is generally unsupported by desert relief and climate, but it is possible on reclaimed land in areas called Tippas after canal irrigation is provided.
