Biology Flashcards

Updated · By the Revizly team

Here’s a free deck of 32 biology flashcards on the unit every intro biology and AP Biology course starts with: the cell. It covers cell structure and organelles, membranes and transport, the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis. Flip them below, then make cards from your own lecture slides when you want a deck that matches your class.

Real example

Cell structure and cell division

What went in: Cards Revizly generated from two public classes on revizly.app: a cell structure and function course and a cell cycle and cell division chapter.

  1. Question 1 of 5

A cell is observed with spindle fibers attached to kinetochores and chromosomes arranged across the cell’s equator. Which stage is it in?

  2. Question 2 of 5

Which sequence correctly lists the stages of interphase and their general activities?

  3. Question 3 of 5

How does cytokinesis typically differ between animal and plant cells?

  4. Question 4 of 5

What is the usual genetic and chromosome-number outcome of mitosis?

  5. Question 5 of 5

What is the defining chromosome-number outcome of meiosis?

What’s in this biology deck

The deck covers the cell unit from end to end: prokaryotes and eukaryotes, organelles, membranes and transport, the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis. Each card asks for one fact you should be able to recall in a few seconds.

TopicCardsWhat you’ll practice
Cell types3Prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes and what every cell has
Organelles9Ribosomes, rough and smooth ER, Golgi, lysosomes, chloroplasts, endosymbiosis, surface area to volume
Membranes and transport8Bilayer structure, passive transport, osmosis, the Na+/K+ pump, endocytosis and exocytosis
Cell cycle and mitosis9Interphase, S phase, the four stages of mitosis, cytokinesis
Meiosis3Haploid cells, crossing over, the four daughter cells

How to study biology with flashcards

Biology is part vocabulary and part process. Use flashcards to lock in the terms and the order of each process, then draw the process from memory to check that you really understand how the steps connect.

One structure, one job

For organelles, make each card pair a structure with its function: rough ER makes proteins, lysosomes break things down, the Golgi modifies and ships proteins. Once each pairing is automatic, questions that describe a function and ask for the organelle get easy.

Learn processes as an ordered list

Mitosis, meiosis and transport are sequences. Make one card for the order of the stages and one for what defines each stage. Then close your notes and sketch the whole process. If you can’t draw metaphase, a card alone won’t save you on the exam.

Compare what’s easy to confuse

Mitosis vs. meiosis, osmosis vs. facilitated diffusion, animal vs. plant cytokinesis. Write cards that ask for the difference. Those comparison questions show up on almost every biology exam.

Keep reviewing after the unit test

Cell biology comes back in genetics, physiology and the final. A few minutes of spaced repetition a day keeps the early material from fading while you move on. Revizly schedules the reviews for you.

Mitosis vs. meiosis at a glance

The most tested comparison in the cell unit. Mitosis makes two identical diploid cells for growth and repair, while meiosis makes four genetically different haploid cells for sexual reproduction.

MitosisMeiosis
PurposeGrowth, repair, replacing cellsMaking gametes for sexual reproduction
DivisionsOneTwo (meiosis I and II)
Daughter cellsTwoFour
Chromosome numberDiploid, same as the parentHaploid, half the parent
Genetically identical?YesNo, crossing over and independent assortment mix them
Homologous chromosomes pair up?NoYes, in prophase I

Make biology flashcards from your own lectures

Upload your professor’s slides, a textbook chapter or your notes and Revizly writes the flashcards, a study guide and a practice quiz from that material, so the deck uses the same terms and examples as your class.

Every biology course draws the line in a different place. One professor expects the stages of prophase I, another never mentions them. Cards built from your own lectures cover exactly what your exam will ask.

Sign in, upload a PDF, PowerPoint file, photos of your notes or a YouTube lecture, and your deck is ready in about 30 seconds. The free plan covers 2 classes a month. Essential is $6.99 a month and Premium is $9.99 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Are these biology flashcards free?

Yes. The whole deck on this page is free to read and flip. You only need a free account to make cards from your own lecture slides.

Do these cards work for AP Biology?

They cover cell structure, transport and cell division, which are core AP Biology and intro college biology topics. They aren’t built from the official AP course description, so use them alongside your class materials.

Who made these cards?

Revizly generated them from public classes on revizly.app that students built from their own course materials. We formatted them lightly and dropped cards that were vague or too detailed for an intro course.

What’s the fastest way to learn the stages of mitosis?

Learn the order first (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase), then one defining event per stage. Close your notes and sketch each stage. If you can draw it, you know it.

How many cards should I study a day?

Ten to fifteen minutes a day with spaced repetition is enough for a deck this size. The cards you miss come back sooner, so your time goes where you need it.

Can Revizly make flashcards from my biology textbook?

Yes. Upload a chapter as a PDF or take photos of the pages, and Revizly writes flashcards, a study guide and a practice quiz from it. Diagrams in your PDF can be kept next to the section they explain.

Can I export the cards to Anki?

Anki export is part of the Premium plan. On every plan you can study your cards in Revizly with spaced repetition, on the web or in the iPhone and Android apps.

Does it handle genetics and physiology too?

Yes. Revizly works from whatever you upload, so genetics, ecology, physiology and molecular biology lectures turn into decks the same way.
