Real example

American Government Foundations

What went in: A PDF list of definitions from a US government class, uploaded by a student.

Definitions. Power: Wealth, knowledge, strength / get people to do what you want. Sovereignty: Final authority. Articles of Confederation: First system of government for the United States during the Revolutionary War, Created a weak national government and gave most power to the states. Monarchy: Rule by one. Tyranny: Unrestrained rule, government has too much power, unfair…

The first ten cards Revizly made from that list, as it wrote them.

From a list of terms to a stack of notecards

Upload your list of terms or your notes, and Revizly writes one card per idea: the question on the front, a short answer on the back. You can study the stack right away on your phone or laptop.

Look at the demo: the source was a messy list with colons, slashes and run-on definitions. Revizly turned it into clean questions, split the long definition of the Articles of Confederation into two cards, and even added a card for “confederation” itself, because you can’t understand the Articles without it.

  • Study the cards, edit the ones you want to word differently, and add your own.

Paper index cards vs. digital notecards

Writing index cards by hand helps you remember what you write, but it takes a long time and the stack never tells you which cards you keep missing. Digital notecards are faster to make and they track that for you.

If you like the feel of paper, here’s a good middle ground: let Revizly make the stack, then copy by hand only the ten cards you keep getting wrong. You get the writing benefit where it matters, without spending your whole evening on cards you already know.

Your notecards come with a schedule

Every stack is scheduled with spaced repetition. After each card, you say whether you got it, and Revizly decides when you’ll see it again: soon if you missed it, later if you knew it.

With paper cards, students usually go through the whole stack every time, including the cards they’ve known for weeks. A schedule cuts that waste. Most days you only see the cards that are due, which keeps sessions short enough to actually do them.

Tips for studying with notecards

Answer out loud before you flip, keep each session short, and study every day. When a card won’t stick, go back to the idea behind it instead of drilling the card harder.

  • Cover the answer and say it first. Recognizing the answer after you see it isn’t the same as knowing it.
  • Shuffle. Learning cards in a fixed order teaches you the order, not the material.
  • Five minutes between classes counts. Short, frequent sessions beat one long one.
  • Test both directions for vocabulary: term to definition and definition to term.

Frequently asked questions

What is a notecard maker?

It’s a tool that creates study notecards (also called index cards or flashcards). Revizly writes the cards for you from your notes instead of making you type each one.

Is it the same thing as a flashcard maker?

Yes. Notecards, index cards and flashcards are the same idea: a question or term on one side, the answer on the other. Revizly makes all of them the same way.

Can I turn a vocabulary list into notecards?

Yes. Paste the list or upload it as a PDF or Word doc. Revizly turns each term into a card, and splits long definitions into separate cards when that makes them easier to learn.

Can I print my notecards?

Not as printable index cards right now. You study them in the app or on the website. Premium users can export them to Anki.

Is it free?

There’s a free plan with 2 classes a month and a preview of each stack. Your first class is made in full. Paid plans start at $6.99 a month.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Revizly has iPhone and Android apps, and your cards and review schedule sync with the website.
